Enable eLabs for Staff Members
After eLabs has been activated for your practice, provide feature access to your staff members in Practice Account -> User Accounts.
Select the user and click Edit.
In the Patient charts section of Global Permissions, activate the toggle button for Lab Orders.
This will enable the staff member to access Lab Orders in patient charts. Staff who have this toggle button activated will be able to view their own lab orders as well as the lab orders submitted by other staff members.
Note: Both providers and staff members can create the lab order.
eLabs Functionality Overview
The Lab Orders functionality includes the following capabilities:
- ordering lab tests directly from laboratories via Remedly
- notifying the submitter when the laboratory results are ready via their dashboard notification
- reviewing lab results either from the dashboard
or from the patient chart.
Note: Created time in the screenshot below means the time a provider/staff started ordering lab tests in the Remedly interface. This time is displayed in UTC (Universal Time Coordinated).
The time indicated in the viewed order form is also in UTC, but it is when the lab order was placed with the lab via the LabSoft interface.
The time stamps for results are in laboratory local time.
Required Fields for Lab Order Submissions
In order to initiate a lab order, you must have the following information about the patient prefilled in the patient chart:
1. Demographic information:
-
- Sex (Gender Assigned at Birth)
- Address
- City
- State
- Zip
2. Insurance information (if the patient has Insurance added to the system):
-
- Insurance Plan Type
Note: Insurance Plan Type is not selected by default. Be sure to select the plan before placing a lab order.
If these required fields are not filled in for the patient when creating a lab order, an error message will display and specify the required fields.
Creating a Lab Order
In order to create a lab order, follow these steps:
1. Open the patient chart
2. Expand the Lab Orders section and click Add Lab Order
3. Create a lab order in the LabSoft interface
Note that:
- when a provider creates a lab order for a patient who has insurance added to their patient chart, Third Party (i.e. insurance) will be selected by default in the Bill To field for the lab order.
- when a provider creates a lab order for a patient who doesn’t have insurance added to their patient chart, Patient will be selected by default in the Bill To field in the lab order.
You can change the option selected in the Bill To field while placing an order.
4. The lab order will be confirmed once submitted. Click Close to return to the patient chart.
You can review all ordered lab tests by selecting Ordered in the drop-down menu.
Review Lab Order Results
When the results are ready, the staff who ordered the lab test will receive a dashboard notification.
Note: The dashboard notification is received only by the user who created the lab order.
You can review the lab results from the dashboard by clicking Review.
A new tab with the lab results will open. If needed, you can print the lab results by clicking Print Report.
Alternatively, lab test results can be reviewed in the patient chart. Under Lab Orders, select All or Received in the drop-down menu.
Find the lab order in the list and click Result.
The results will open in a new tab.
